Much of what makes Melbourne an exciting and dynamic place to live has changed. As lockdown restrictions are being gradually lifted, life in the city is not how we remember it. Physical distancing between people is now the norm, we’re moving around the city differently, and relating to each other in new ways.

In this public lecture, Associate Professor David Bissell will explain how geography offers important ideas to better understand what’s going on, complementing the scientific understandings provided by epidemiologists and public health experts. David will explain how geographical ideas relating to place and mobility can help us make sense of our current situation and what we might be feeling. These geographical ideas will also provide us with important political tools to identify the new forms of inequality and hardship that are unfolding, prompting questions about how we should collectively respond to shape Melbourne’s new future.
