Bushfire expert awarded Order of Australia
Kevin Tolhurst’s bushfire expertise has been recognised in the Queen’s birthday honours.
One of our Sustainability at Melbourne experts has been recognised in this year's Queen’s birthday honours. Professor Kevin Tolhurst, from the University of Melbourne's School of Ecosystem and Forest Sciences has been made an officer of the Order of Australia (AM) in the general division. Awared for his significant service to science through land and bushfire management, and to the community through providing expert advice at fire emergencies.
Tolhurst and a team of researchers have developed computer software to predict the path of bushfires. Within two minutes of a bushfire being reported in Victoria, the program can map out where the fire is likely to spread, helping managers decide if they should send firefighters or evacuate communities.
